"Going for Baroque" by Laura Beeman

The Baroque Horsemen of Northern California (BHNC) held their second annual schooling show at Ranch Hotel in Vacaville on June 15, 2002. The facility was beautiful, the food was yummy, the raffle was fun and the horses were spectacular. The club includes Lipizzans, Friesians, Andalusians Lusitanos and part-breds in all its events and activities. Judge Kim Rollison had quite a challenge with a diverse class list that consisted of halter classes, sport horse on the triangle, under saddle classes and fun classes. There was even a driving class. The club likes to include classes for the entertainment of the audience and this year offered a costume class (won by a lady riding a unicorn), a champagne class (Don't spill!) a pairs class (won by the Goldmans - a husband and wife team) and a very special trail class called "Save the Maiden" BHNC modified a typical trail class so the horse and owner first plucked a sword and a flower from a fence, and then went on a journey. They passed through the forest, over the logs, across the river, around the rocks, over the bridge and presented the flower to the maiden. This class was offered under saddle and also in-hand for young horses. In BHNC tradition, we had high point awards (beautiful crystal vases) for each breed. For the second year in a row, Janna Goldman and her flashy gelding, Black Sterling trotted away with the High point Friesian award. Dana Strauss and Cielo del Sonador won for the High Point for the Andalusians and there was a tie for High point Lipizzan. The award was shared by Leslie Jones and her gelding Miles, and Stacy Lingenfelter riding Cody, owned by Lynn Rougeau. At the lunch break BHNC hosted a sale parade where several Friesian horses were displayed in hand and under saddle while the crowd enjoyed hamburgers, hotdogs, nachos, potato salad and fruit. At the end of the day, the winners of the raffle items were announced and everyone went home happy. Most commented on how comfortable they were at the show. Although held in a top-notch facility, the atmosphere was friendly and relaxed and great emphasis was placed on safety of both participants and horses. The show management strives to make this venue one where horse owners can have fun with their equine friends in a non-threatening and encouraging environment. The next schooling show is planned for October 2002 and will be held at Ranch Hotel in Vacaville again. We expect to open this show to horses of other breeds to share this event with more of our equestrian friends. In addition, the club is planning several more events - including a stallion auction, foal raffle, and Christmas party. Annual membership in BHNC is only $40 and includes reduced rates at all club events and a newsletter that is published four times each year.
